This is a film I wasn't necessarily interested in but since there are no new films coming out any time soon, I decided to check it out and for the most of it, I actually really enjoyed it.
Starting with the positives, this is just a simple fun adventure film that knows what it wants to be and it doesn't overstay it's welcome.
The voice acting is also fantastic. Tom Holland and Chris Pratt are perfectly casted as Elf Brothers Ian and Barley, to the point where you look at the characters designs and personalities and I just cannot imagine anybody else voicing these two.
As this is a pixar film, most of the stories they come up with are always emotionally satisfying and connect with audiences and they don't stop here. The main story is a very heartfelt one that will connect to a fair amount of young people out there and the emotion is used really well throughout the film.
Finally, this is a very funny film. A lot of the jokes work really well and I was laughing the whole way through.
On a mixed aspect, it took me a while to get used to the world building. Now usually I always love the world building in a pixar film but for this one, at first I felt the characters quite randomly placed in the film but as it went on, I got more used to it and enjoyed what they did with it.
Now onto the bad and the big problem is the 3rd act. I don't know what happened here but I just didn't connect with it at all. It felt like somebody else stepped in to direct it. There is a very forced action scene placed in that although was foreshadowed in the film earlier, I feel could be edited out and wouldn't affect the film at all and the look of the villain is the most laughable design I've ever seen.
Also how the main story concludes, I found it to be very anticlimactic and personally I feel cheapened the emotion throughout the film. In a way, it reminded me of how I felt about last year's Glass, I understood where the makers were going with the film but it's not the direction I would have gone with.
Besides my thoughts on the 3rd act, this is a very enjoyable fun family film that I do recommend and though it's not pixars best film, it's certainly one of the better ones.
